The Scallop project started while I was studying in University at UWTSD in Swansea, Wales. Whilst doing some volunteering work with children I saw a disabled child struggling to sit on the chairs provided. As the child’s mother was unable to leave her child unattended to gather materials, I was happy to lend a hand. After speaking to the mother, I learnt that she had not found any product that was light or compact enough for her to carry and one that didn’t fix her child into a certain position. She wanted a product that supported her child but continued to allow him to move, reach and play.
After doing my own research, I decided that I wanted to solve this issue by creating a lightweight seat that was simple, portable and versatile to aid children with mild to moderate disabilities in long sitting and to add extra support whilst sitting on a chair. I wanted the product to be attractive, colourful and to promote active participation amongst the whole family.
The flexible shell of the Scallop provides support without preventing movement. It encourages the child to balance whilst lending some required support. This fun and versatile product can be used for a wide variety of activities in your daily lives, such as enjoying a meal at the table, doing work in class or long sitting on the floor while playing, reading or watching T.V.
R82 spotted the Scallop while I was finishing my 3rd year at University and it has since been under development in Denmark with myself playing an active role.
